Center for Collective Impact in Earthquake Science Podcast

The Center for Collective Impact in Earthquake Science (C-CIES), a catalyst project funded by the National Science Foundation, is working toward becoming a full-fledged interdisciplinary research center that focuses on high-impact low-probability events, with an emphasis on community engagement. Using collective impact, C-CIES’s research will prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations that have been historically underserved by current earthquake science, engineering, and public policy. Please check out our podcast to learn more about the team, the science, and our plans for the future of C-CIES!

Join hosts Dr. Aaron Velasco and Monica Alvillar and get to know a little bit about the Center for Collective Impact in Earthquake Science (C-CIES), a National Science Foundation funded catalyst grant. Aaron, Professor at The University of Texas at El Paso, serves as Principal Investigator of C-CIES and will join Monica (Director) on a weekly basis to meet up with different team members to hear discuss their backgrounds and role on the project. This week the two discuss the Center and provide a foundation for what's to come.

Today Aaron and Monica meet up with Dr. Jeff Weidner, Associate Professor at the University of Texas at El Paso and Co-Principal Investigator of the Center for Collective Impact in Earthquake Science (C-CIES). Jeff is an expert in Civil Engineering for C-CIES, and he was instrumental in the inception of this project. Hear about his background and how Civil Engineering plays a vital role in C-CIES.

Join Aaron and Monica as they sit-down and speak to Dr. Marianne Karplus, Associate Professor in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences at The University of Texas at El Paso. Marianne also serves as Co-Principal Investigator of the Center for Collective Impact in Earthquake Science. In this episode Marianne shares about her background, time in the field doing research, and what excites her most about C-CIES.

On this episode, Monica and Aaron do things a little different. Instead of interviewing a guest, they will be talking to each other about what a pilot project is and how Center for Collective Impact in Earthquake Science (C-CIES) is using this approach to advance the research goals of this project.

On this episode, we sit down with Dr. Sandra Hardy, the Director of the Community-driven Inclusive Excellence and Leadership Opportunities in the Geosciences (CIELO-G) grant. CIELO-G is also funded by the National Science Foundation and implementing the framework of Collective Impact. However, there focus is specific to the community of El Paso. Listen and learn more about their initiatives and how C-CIES and CIELO-G are working together!

On this episode of the C-CIES podcast join Aaron and Monica as they sitdown with Dr. Anne-Marie Nunez to talk about the Collective Impact strategy that serves as the foundation for the Center. Dr. Anne-Marie Nunez also shares her own experiences Collective Impact, the work she is doing with the Diana Natalicio Institute for Hispanic Student Success, and and her love of good breakfast tacos.

Join Aaron and Monica as they discuss NASA, the Moon, Artemis III, and the fault that runs through the El Paso regions with Dr. Jose Hurtado from the University of Texas at El Paso. Dr. Hurtado is a Geologist who was most recently recognized in the media for his work training NASA Astronauts and being selected for the Artemis III Geology Team.

Join Aaron and Monica as they sit down with the Director of the newly funded Cascadia Region Earthquake Science Center (CRESCENT), Dr. Diego Melgar.
